About The BLAGstress

Me, Elyse!I think my friend Melissa summed it up best, in a discussion with my friend Catherine:

Catherine: “There was also a guy recently that figured out how they could have lifted the stones and moved them into place…. I forget where I read that, though. hm.”
Liss: “You should tell Elyse. She bitches like a geologist. Possibly because she IS a geologist.”

My name’s Elyse, and I’m a geoscientist in training. Montclair State University BS ‘08, MS in progress at the same institution. I’m intending on doing some research into the granitic gneisses of the New York and New Jersey Highlands to compare their ages, but as this is only my first semester, I’ve got a long ways to go. I love trilobites, body modifications, music, and many, many other things – that I’ll describe more once I figure out what I want to write here.

Currently I write mostly about earth science and pop culture, two of my favorite things of all time. I’m always open for more suggestions, though – just drop me an e-mail at elysetheamazing [a] gmail.com!

I also came across your blog at random (sorry, but I was ggling “geologists who don’t want to be geologists anymore”). I was wondering if anybody would be interested in a bitch session on the lack of jobs in geology? It sounds like you have already started your MS work. Have you thought about what you will do after you finish? I just wanted to put up a huge flashing warning sign for anybody who might read this that although geology is cool (i had an awesome time in undergrad and grad), we very quickly get overeducated but underexperienced in this line of work, want to get paid more when we get that PG, then get stuck in a deadend job. Just wanted to get that off my chest. Thanks.

Melissa, thank you for that! I’m still in the middle of my MS right now, but from what I’ve heard, it’s almost exactly like you’re describing.

And feel free to bitch! This is, obviously, bitch like a geologist – and if you feel the need to rant, go ahead and do so!

I’m a female geologist-in-training in Missouri, supposedly graduating with my B.S. in 2011. Just wanted to say that you are extremely awesome; I stumbled across your blog by accident, but I’ll be a dedicated reader from now on!
